What Are Baby Yoda Cookies?

The Seattle baker Katy Atakturk shared her original Baby Yoda cookies on social media and these cute cookies have gone viral among Star War fans. Start with an angel cookie cutter, and remove the angel’s head. Then the wings turn into Baby Yoda’s ears. What a mind-blowing hack!

These delicious cookies mimic the silhouette of little Grogu perfectly. Easy and tasty royal icing can be dyed to his signature colors to make cookies so cute. Pair them with Disney’s blue Macarons for a fun Star War cookie party!

This recipe does take some time because it takes time for the icing to set. But the decorating is simple enough that it can easily become a family affair. They keep well when individually packaged and can even be frozen for up to 6 months if you want to make a few batches in one go.

Baby Yoda Cookies with An Angel Cookie Cutter Hack

It may seem strange at first, but you won’t believe how easily an Angel Cookie Cutter can become a Baby Yoda. You’ll need to use an angel cutter with pointed wings, facing upward, so they match the shape of The Child’s ears. After the cookies are cut out, you’ll need to cut off the angel’s heads, leaving the top slightly rounded to mimic the space in between Baby Yoda’s ears. You can gather the scraps and re-roll them into more dough.

Pro Tips: When you cut off the angle’s head, try to make the cut slightly curve downwards to create Baby Yoda’s head. While you can use a knife as the original creator did, we find using a spoon is much easier to shape the top of the head.

Ingredients and Substitutes

Ingredients for making baby Yoda cookies.
  • All-purpose flour: Use all-purpose flour for making the sugar cookie dough.
  • Corn Starch: It’s the secret ingredient that prevents your sugar cookies from spreading as they bake. It has also been credited for making cookies extra chewy.
  • Salt: The small amount of salt in baked goods actually helps to enhance the sweetness. Table salt works best in this recipe.
  • Unsalted Butter: Plan ahead and take your butter out of the fridge a few hours before baking so it can get to room temperature.
  • Sugar: An ingredient so important it made it into the cookie’s name! Plain white sugar is all you need.
  • Egg: This recipe only calls for one egg.
  • Vanilla Extract: It’ll enhance the taste of your cookies. Both pure or artificial vanilla will work fine.
  • Powdered Sugar: For making the royal icing.
  • Meringue Powder: It helps to create a sturdy and stable icing that hardens faster. This is the brand I used.
  • Water: You will need room temperature water in this recipe.
  • Food coloring & coloring gel: You will need to color your icing to match Baby Yoda – green, brown and black for the eyes. You can mix red, yellow, and blue to make brown if necessary. For eyes, you can use black coloring, black decorating gel, or melted dark chocolate.

Baby Yoda Cookies Tools & Tips

  • Cookie cutters: An angel-shaped cookie cutter is the most important tool in this recipe, as it is going to give you the perfect shape for your little Baby Yoda. If you don’t already have one, be sure to look for an angel with wings in a similar shape to Baby Yoda’s ears.
  • Rolling pin: You will need a rolling pin to roll out your dough before cutting it.
  • Mixer: You can make this recipe with either a hand or stand mixer. For a stand mixer, use the whisk attachment to cream your butter and sugar, then switch to the paddle when adding your dry ingredients.
  • Pastry bag (optional): If you have pastry bags at home, they’re a great tool to help in icing these cookies, but there’s no need to go out and buy any. You can always use a ziptop bag.

  • Combine powdered sugar and meringue in a mixing bowl. Then add water and beat with a hand mixer at high speed for about 2 minutes.
  • Reserve 1 tablespoon of the icing and divide the rest into two bowls.

  • Transfer the icing into separate piping bags or ziplock bags (with the corner snipped off).
  • Pipe the icing onto the cookies and fill out the head and body of the cookie. Then pipe a small black dot for Yoda’s eyes. Note that it’ll take about 2 hours for the icing to dry completely at room temperature. If you need it to set more quickly, place them in the refrigerator to speed it up.

Pro Tips: The decoration for these cookies is simple enough that anyone can make them look professionally done. Mix the colors to match a picture of Baby Yoda. Add the food coloring slowly to avoid making them too dark. If you’re worried, keep a small amount of white icing on the side to add back in if necessary. You can use your fingers to smooth out the icing if needed.

How to Store Baby Yoda Sugar Cookies?

Once your Baby Yoda cookies are completely dry, they can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 2 weeks. You will be able to stack them at this point without ruining the design, but try to keep them away from any sunlight so the colors don’t fade. Cookies packed individually in cello bags won’t only make cute gifts or on-the-go treats, but they will last longer too, about 3-4 weeks. You can also freeze them for up to 6 months.

  • 4-5 tablespoons water room temperature
  • food coloring (You’ll need green, brown. If you don’t have brown, you can mix red, yellow, and blue)
  • black decorating gel (You can also use melted dark chocolate)

Instructions

Make the Sugar Cookie Dough

  • In a large bowl, mix together flour, corn starch, and salt.
  • Using a stand mixer or hand mixer, beat the butter and sugar together.
  • Add the egg and vanilla extract, and continue beating until combined. Scrape down sides of the bowl.
  • Pour in the dry ingredient mixture. Mix until everything is well combined.
  • Flatten the dough, and then wrap it with plastic wrap. Chill in the refrigerator for 30-60 minutes to firm up. (You can leave it in the fridge for up to 1 day.)
  • Once the dough is chilled, place it on a flat surface dusted with flour. Roll it out to about 1/4 inch with a rolling pin. Move the dough around to prevent it from sticking.

Shape with An Angel Cookie Cutter

  • Use a Christmas angel cookie cutter to make the initial cut of the cookies. Gather together the extra scraps to re-roll for more cookies.
  • Use a spoon or small knife to cut off half of the angel’s head, making the edges smooth with a “mound” shape.

Bake the Cookies

  • Preheat oven to 375°. Prepare a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and set it aside.
  • Place the shaped cookies on the baking sheet.
  • Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the centers are puffy and no longer glossy. Make sure the pull the cookies out of the oven before they start turning brown.

Make the Royal Icing

  • Combine powdered sugar and meringue in a mixing bowl.
  • Add water and beat with a hand-mixer at high speed for about 2 minutes until smooth with a “flooding” consistency. (If your icing is too thin, you can adjust by adding more powdered sugar. If the icing is too thick, gradually add in a tiny bit of water.)
  • Reserve 1-2 tablespoons of the icing to a small bowl for decorating the middle of the eyes.
  • Then divide the rest of the icing into two larger bowls.
  • Add brown coloring to one large bowl, and green to another. Whisk until smooth. (You can gradually add more coloring to create the perfect Yoda green and brown colors). Cover the bowl with a damp paper towel and plastic wrap until ready to use to prevent the icing from drying out.

Decorate Baby Yoda Cookies

  • Transfer the icing into separate piping bags or ziplock bag (with the corner snipped off).
  • Pipe the icing onto the cookies and fill out the head and body of the cookie. Then pipe small black dot for Yoda’s eyes. Add a tiny white icing to the middle of the eyes. Note that it’ll take about 2 hours for the icing to dry completely at room temperature. If you need it to set more quickly, place them in the refrigerator to speed it up.

Equipment

Angel Cookie Cutter
Rolling Pin
Hand Mixer

Notes

  • It’s very important to use room temperature butter so that it can be creamed properly with sugar.
  • Add the food coloring slowly to the icing to avoid making them too dark. If you’re worried, keep a small amount of white icing on the side to add back in if necessary.
  • If your decoration is not smooth, you can use your fingers to smooth it out.
  • If you don’t have brown coloring, you can use a combination of red, yellow and blue to create the color.
