If you’ve popped your favorite bread into the toaster and realize it’s on the fritz, there’s no need to worry. You may not realize it, but your oven can be used to toast bread as well.

Best Ways to Toast Bread in the Oven

Method 1: How to Toast Bread in the Oven without Using the Broiler

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F. Use a rimmed baking sheet that’s large enough to hold the bread in one layer. Do not add any oil to the baking sheet.
  • Place the sliced unbuttered bread on the baking sheet in one layer.
  • Bake for 4-6 minutes, until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  • Turn the slices over and bake for another 4-5 minutes until evenly toasted on both sides. Serve and enjoy with your favorite toppings.

Method 2: How to Toast Bread in the Oven Using the Broiler (Faster Way)

  • Position the oven rack so that the bread is 3-4 inches from the heating element.
  • Turn on the broiler.
  • Place the bread on a rimmed baking sheet large enough to hold the pieces in one layer. Do not add any oil to the baking sheet.
  • Place the sliced unbuttered bread on the baking sheet.
  • Broil the bread for 1- ½ minutes, watching closely, until the top is golden brown and crispy.
  • Turn the slices over and broil for another minute or so, until evenly toasted on both sides.

Note: You must keep an eye on the bread when using this method. The broiler is hot and can quickly burn the bread if left for too long.

What is the Best Temperature to Toast Bread?

Depending on how crispy you prefer to have your toast, the oven temperature can range from 350°F for softer toast, to 400°F for crispier toast. Be sure to keep an eye on the bread to prevent it from becoming too dark.

How Long to Toast the Bread in Oven?

As a general guideline, bread toasted in a 350°F oven will take about 4 to 5 minutes per side. Bread toasted at 400°F will take approximately 4 minutes on the first side, and 3 to 4 minutes on the second side.

How to Toast Bread in the Oven with Butter

If you prefer to add butter to bread while it’s toasting in the oven, add about a teaspoon to the bread before placing it on the baking sheet. The toast will have a crunchier, and slightly fried texture. Too much butter will cause the bread to become oily.
