Short for bratwurst, brats are a juicy and flavorful type of sausage. They’re great in a toasted bun, covered in delicious toppings like diced onions, mustard and ketchup. And because they cook quickly, they’re the perfect choice for a weeknight meal.

What are Bratwursts Made Of?

Originally from Germany, bratwurst is typically made from pork or veal that has been seasoned with flavorful spices such as caraway, coriander, ginger, and nutmeg.

How to Cook Your Bratwurst in the Oven at 400°F

  • First, move your oven rack to the center position and preheat the oven to 400°F. Cover a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or foil.
  • Place the bratwurst on the baking sheet with plenty of space around them.
  • If you want to add veggies such as onions or peppers, toss them with a little oil and season with salt, pepper, and your desired seasonings. Place them on the baking sheet before adding the brats.
  • Place the brats on the pan, ensuring that they’re not resting on top of the veggies so they’ll brown evenly.
  • Flip the brats after 15 minutes and give the veggies a stir. Continue cooking for 5-10 minutes until done.

How Long to Cook Brats in the Oven

The brats should cook for about 15 minutes on one side, and then another 10 minutes after turning, although the cooking time varies due to the different sizes and different ovens.

Use an instant-read thermometer to check for doneness. They should have an internal temperature of about 160°F when done

Larger brats will need more time to cook, so be sure to check the internal temperature with an instant-read thermometer.

After they are done, let them rest for about 5 minutes before serving, to allow the juices to redistribute.

Tips and Tricks

  • Line the baking sheet with parchment paper or foil: do this to prevent sticking and to make clean-up easier.
  • Place the brats ½ inch apart: space them this way on the baking sheet to allow for even cooking.
  • Flip the brats after 15 minutes to ensure even cooking.
  • Check for doneness by using an instant-read thermometer. Brats are done when they reach 160°F.
  • Brats can be marinated with beer for more flavor.

What to Serve with Bratwurst

  • Enjoy them in a bun topped with your favorites, such as chopped onions, peppers, mustard, and ketchup.
  • Serve them with sauerkraut for a delicious combination of flavors.
  • Add them to a traditional German potato salad.
  • Serve them alongside hearty baked beans for a comforting meal.

What are the Best Buns for Brats

Because of their size and to hold the additional toppings, you want to use buns that are sturdy. Buns made for sausages, instead of hot dogs, are a good choice.

What’s the Best Sauerkraut for Brats

The type of sauerkraut you use is totally up to you but if you’re looking for a classic German-style sauerkraut, try Hengstenberg Bavarian Style Sauerkraut with Wine.

How to Store Leftover Brats

  • Refrigerate Leftovers: Place your leftover brats in an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 3 days.
  • Freeze Leftovers: You can also freeze leftover cooked bratwurst. Place them in an airtight freezer-safe container or a resealable freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. When you’re ready to use them, let them thaw in the refrigerator and then reheat in the oven or in the microwave.
