In this post, you’ll find the ultimate guide for converting between tablespoons and cups. First things first, a reminder about abbreviations:

Tablespoon = tablespoon = Tbsp = tbsp

Converting between tablespoons and cups is super easy. What makes it a little complicated is the fact that there are differences between US measurements and metric measurements. We’ve covered this below, so be sure to keep reading.

How Many Cups are 6 Tablespoons?

Six (6) tablespoons equal ⅜ cup or 0.375 cups in US Customary measurements. Customary means the measures used in cooking, and you can use it for liquid and dry measurements alike.

If you don’t happen to have a ⅜ measuring cup, some one-cup glass or plastic measuring cups will have a ⅜ marking. In a pinch, you can measure it as one full ¼ cup measure plus half of another ¼ cup measure.

Note that some converters suggest that 6 tablespoons equal ⅓ cup, but that’s incorrect as ⅓ cup is over 10% less than ⅜ cup. It could get you into trouble with recipes, especially for baking.

Here’s what the conversion chart looks like:

US TablespoonsUS Cups
4 tablespoons¼ cup (or 0.25 cup)
6 tablespoons⅜ cup (or 0.375 cup)
8 tablespoons½ cup (or 0.5 cup)
12 tablespoons¾ cup (or 0.75 cup)
16 tablespoons1 cup

6 Tablespoons to Cups (Metric)

Many countries use the metric system, which differs slightly from US measurements. In Canada, for example, a tablespoon would be 15ml. In the US, a tablespoon is 14.79ml, which is only 1.4% less.

6 metric tablespoons equal to 90ml, which is the same as 0.36 metric cups or 0.375 US cups. With such a minor difference, it hardly matters if you use metric tablespoons or US tablespoons.

6 Tablespoons to Cups (US Legal)

In the United States, the US Legal Cup is stipulated by the FDA when listing out the nutrition information on food packaging. The US Legal Cup measures 8 fluid ounces or 240ml. This is slightly smaller than the US Customary Cup, which measures 236.588ml.

With such a tiny difference between them, your recipe won’t be affected too much. In any event, most measuring cups and spoons will use US Customary measurements.

6 Tablespoons to Cups (Imperial)

Though imperial measurements are used in the UK, they’re rarely used in other regions around the world. The US measurements tend to be 20% smaller than their UK imperial counterparts, as you can see below:

  • The US tablespoon is 14.79ml  while the UK imperial tablespoon is 17.75ml
  • The US cup measures 237ml while the UK imperial cup measures 284ml

With this in mind, 6 US tablespoons would be equal to 5 UK imperial tablespoons. It definitely gets confusing jumping from one side of the pond to the other!

How to Measure Liquids

In the culinary world, the term “liquid” is also used to refer to ingredients that are solid at room temperature. Some liquids can fill the space in their measuring container at room temperature, while others (like butter) need to be melted first.

Liquid ingredients are much easier to measure than solid ingredients since they typically weigh just as much as their volume measurement in ounces. For example, 1 ounce is equal to 28.83 grams or millimeters. A fluid ounce of water is equal to a cup of water, which also weighs 8 ounces.

How to Measure Solids

For dry ingredients or solids, your best bet is always to measure by weight, rather than volume. For these ingredients, you’ll get the most accurate reading if you use a scale with a tare function. Place a dry, clean container on the scale and press the ‘tare’ button to set the scale to zero. Now, you can add your dry ingredients to the container to get the net weight.

For example, if you’re measuring 2 cups of flour, you can expect this to weigh 9 ounces. Place your container on the scale, set it to zero and measure out 9 ounces of flour. By using the weight of the flour instead of relying only on the volume, you can ensure you’re getting more accurate measurements. This is especially important when baking.

How Many Tablespoons in a Cup?

In the US, one cup consists of 16 tablespoons. To put that in context, here’s that same volume converted into other units of measurement:

1 US cup = 8 fluid ounces = 16 tablespoons = 48 teaspoons = 237 ml
