What is a Gallon?

The definition of a Royal gallon being the volume of 10 pounds of water at room temperature, or 277.4 cubic inches (4.5 liters in metric). Although this measurement gets little use in Britain currently, it is commonly used in Canada and some other countries.

When America became independent of the British Empire in 1776, it adopted the Queen Anne gallon of 231 cubic inches (3.79 liters in metric). This US gallon also corresponds to 4 quarts or 16 US cups. Accordingly, the US gallon is 20% smaller than the British Imperial gallon.
