Easy Greek Gyro Sandwich with Tzatziki Sauce

The Easy Greek Gyro Sandwich is gyro meat, fresh vegetables, and feta cheese wrapped in warm pita bread. You can top it with Tzatziki sauce, and it’s the ultimate sandwich for Greek food lovers!
This delicious Mediterranean sandwich is easy to make with either homemade or store-bought gyro meat. It’s one of my favorite sandwich recipes along with Chopped Cheese Sandwich and Donut Chicken Sandwich.
Try different types of meat for flavor combinations while still keeping the traditional Tzatziki sauce and pita. The fresh vegetables make this a healthy meal choice your whole family will enjoy.
What is A Gyro Sandwich?
The gyro sandwich is one of the most popular Greek meals. Traditional Gyro sandwich is made with gyro meat, fresh veggies, feta cheese served on pita bread, and often topped with Tzatziki yogurt sauce. and gyro sauce wrapped in pita bread.
Traditional gyro meat is usually cooked on a vertical rotisserie and derived from the lamb-based doner kebab. Nowdays you can find gyro meat made with pork, chicken, beef, or lamb.
Ingredients for Gyro Sandwich
- Gyro Meat
- Olive Oil
- Flatbread Pitas
- Feta Cheese
- Tomatoes
- Lettuce
- Red Onion
- Cucumber
- Plain Greek Yogurt
- Dill
- Fresh Mint
- Lemon Juice
- Garlic
- Sea Salt
How to Make Gyro Sandwich
Step 1: Make Tzatziki Sauce
- Grated cucumber and squeeze it to remove excess liquid. Then add it to a large mixing bowl.
- Add yogurt, olive oil, chopped mint, lemon juice, garlic, and salt to the bowl. Stir to combine.
- Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to develop.
Step 2: Prepare Gyro Meat
- Cut the gyro loaf into thin slices.
- Add oil to a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add gyro slices to the skillet and fry for about 2 minutes on each side or until they are browned to your liking.
Step 3: Heat the Bread & Assemble the Sandwich
- Heat the pita bread in another pan.
- Add the gyro meat on the pita. Top with red onion, lettuce, tomatoes, feta cheese, and tzatziki sauce. Serve and enjoy!
Tips for the Best Gyro Sandwich
- Make sure to squeeze the sliced cucumber so that your sauce won’t have too much liquid.
- You can make the tzatziki sauce ahead of time: The sauce can be store in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- You can wrapping your Gyro sandwich in foil to help hold its shape and keeps it warm.
What Type of Meat is Gyro?
There are different types of Gyro meat, and lamb is the most traditional choice. However, you can also find gyro meat made with chicken, beef, or pork grilled on a vertically rotating skewer. The meat is thinly sliced off the rotating skewer and layered in the sandwich.
What’s the Difference Between Pita and Gyro?
Pita is a type of flatbread used to make sandwiches and wraps. Gyro is a type of sandwich made using pita bread, grilled meat, assorted vegetables, and yogurt sauce.
How to Make Homemade Gyro Meat?
Homemade Gyro Meat can be made using ground meat such as ground beef or lamb, onions, garlic, and assorted spices. Once the meat has marinated in the sauces for a few hours in the fridge, pulse the meat in a food processor until it is a thick paste. The mixture can then be pressed into loaf pans and cooked in the oven at 165F for 50 to 70 minutes. Once the excess fat has been drained, the meat can be wrapped and chilled in the fridge overnight. Finally, remove from the fridge and cut into thin slices to use in the sandwich.

Gyro, which comes from the Greek word for “spin”, can be pronounced either as /YEE-roh/ or /ZHIHR-oh/.

Best Gyro Sandwich Recipe
Ingredients
Gyro Meat
- 3/4 pound cooked Gyro meat, from the deli
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
Tzatziki Sauce
- 1/2 medium cucumber, (grated using the large holes of your box grater)
- 3/4 cup plain Greek yogurt
- 1/2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh mint
- 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice, freshly squeezed
- 1/2 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt
For the Sandwich
- 4 flatbread pitas
- 4 tablespoons feta cheese
- 1/2 cup sliced tomatoes
- 2/3 cup lettuce, chopped
- 1/2 red onion, sliced
Instructions
Make Tzatziki Sauce
- Squeeze the grated cucumber to remove excess liquid.
- Add the squeezed cucumber to a large bowl.
- Add the yogurt, olive oil, chopped mint, lemon juice, garlic, and salt to the bowl. Stir to combine.
- Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes to allow the flavors to develop. Taste and add more salt if needed.
Prepare Gyro Meat
- Cut the gyro loaf into thin slices (about 1/4 inch)
- Add oil to a cast-iron skillet over medium heat. Once hot, add gyro slices to the skillet and fry for about 2 minutes each side or until they are browned to your liking. Use tongs to flip them. Transfer to a plate and let them cool slightly.
Heat the Bread & Assemble the Sandwich
- Heat the pita bread in another pan.
- Add the gyro meat on the pita. Top with red onion, lettuce, tomatoes, feta cheese, and tzatziki sauce. Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- Leftover tzatziki sauce can last for about 4 days in the refrigerator.
- You can wrap the gyro sandwich in foil to help hold it together.
