What is Triple Sec?

You may have heard of triple sec but do you know exactly what it is? Some people think it’s a spirit like rum or vodka, but it’s actually a liqueur. Triple sec contains about fifteen to forty percent alcohol and is orange flavored. It’s made with sun-dried orange skins soaked in alcohol for about 24 hours.

Triple Sec Liqueur vs Cointreau

Triple sec and Cointreau both come from the family of dry orange liqueurs. Cointreau is a higher quality liqueur compared to triple sec, and has a stronger and smoother flavor. Cointreau is also a bit more expensive and has a higher alcohol level.

Triple Sec Substitute

If you’ve run out of triple sec, there’s no need to worry. You can use equal amounts of any other orange liqueur. This includes swapping in Grand Marnier, Cointreau, or Curacao. You can also use two teaspoons of orange extract or about two drops of orange oil.

What Goes Well with Triple Sec?

Triple sec pairs perfectly with cranberry juice! Not only does it taste amazing, but the two together can be the basis of just about any triple sec cocktail.
