In this post we’re sharing some tips on how to make whipped cream without using heavy cream.

Can I Make Whipped Cream Without Heavy Cream?

Yes, you can. What you’ll need to do is replace the heavy cream with a suitable substitute. An easy way to achieve this is to use milk, gelatin, and sugar. Alternatively, you can use whole milk, butter, salt, powdered sugar, and vanilla if desired.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Full Fat Milk
  • Unflavoured Powdered Gelatin
  • Powdered Sugar

  • In a small bowl, add 1/4 cup cold milk and scatter the powdered gelatin on top. Let it sit for 5 minutes to form a spongy texture.
  • Then melt the mixture in a microwave. Set the mixture aside to cool.
  • Pour 1 cup of cold milk into a large bowl. Pour in the melted gelatin mixture and whisk together. Place in the fridge for 20 minutes.
  • Remove the mixture from the fridge, add the powdered sugar and stir until combined.
  • Beat with an electric mixer at high speed until the mixture thickens and doubles in volume. Serve and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

  • The powdered sugar will help to bind the milk and butter together and also acts as a thickener.
  • The butter should not be scalding hot. Use a double boiler and heat it until it’s just melted.
  • An electric mixer or stand mixer will make the process easier. After melting the butter, adding the milk, and whisking for 5 minutes, let the mixture cool for another 5 minutes. Pour the mixture into the bowl of a stand mixer and add the remaining ingredients. Slowly increase the speed of the mixture to high, and continue to mix until it reaches the desired consistency.
  • If the mixture is not thick enough, add a tablespoon of powdered sugar and use the mixer again until the whipped cream reaches the desired consistency.

How to Make This Recipe without a Mixer

If you don’t have an electric mixer, you can still use this recipe by whisking the whipped cream by hand.

  • Place the butter into a heatproof bowl and place it in a double boiler.
  • When the butter is almost melted, remove the heatproof bowl from the double boiler and whisk the butter until it is completely melted.
  • Slowly add the milk into the butter and mix with a whisk. Continue to whisk for about 5 minutes and set aside to cool for about 5 minutes.
  • Add the remaining ingredients and whisk for 5-7 minutes until combined. The mixture will begin to become thick and creamy.
  • If you want a thicker consistency, place the bowl in the fridge for about 5 minutes. Remove from the fridge and whisk the mixture for 5 minutes until it thickens.
