How to Make Marinated Grilled Salmon

Step 1: Marinate the Salmon

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons of oil and the soy sauce, lemon juice, honey, and garlic.
  • Place the marinade into a resealable bag.
  • Add the salmon and gently massage to coat. Marinate for 1-3 hours in the fridge.
  • Remove the salmon from the fridge 30 minutes before it’s time to cook.
  • Remove the salmon from the marinade and allow the excess marinade to drain.

Step 2: Grill the Salmon

  • Brush the BBQ grills with oil and preheat to medium heat.
  • Drizzle the salmon with oil and place onto the grill flesh side down.
  • Cook for about 3 minutes or until golden. Gently turn to the other side with tongs.
  • Brush the flesh with some of the basting sauce and then close the BBQ lid.
  • Cook for 3 – 4 minutes, basting one more time halfway through, or until the internal temperature is between 125°-130°F.
  • Transfer the salmon to a plate and let it rest for a few minutes until it reaches an internal temperature of 145°F. Serve and enjoy!

Tips and Tricks

  • Use skin on salmon filets. The skin helps to hold the salmon together, making it easier to handle on the grill. When you serve the salmon it’s up to you if you want to eat the skin. It’s actually delicious!
  • Place the salmon flesh side down on the grill first, and then flip to the other side to continue cooking.
  • Resist the urge to move the salmon around after placing it on the grill. It will initially stick to the grill and will release when cooked.

How to Know When The Salmon Is Done

Salmon is done when it has reached an internal temperature of 145°F. Note that because the fish will continue to cook even after it’s removed from the grill, it’s a good idea to cook it until it’s between 125°-130°F to avoid it drying out. While it rests for a few minutes, the temperature will increase. Use an instant-read thermometer to check for doneness. You’re safe to eat the salmon when it reaches an internal temperature of 145°F. If you don’t have an instant-read thermometer, insert a sharp knife into the thickest part of the fish. If it’s slightly translucent in the middle and beginning to flake, it’s done.

How Long Should You Marinate Salmon?

Salmon can be marinated for up to 3 hours in the fridge. When it’s almost time to grill, remove it from the fridge and let it come to room temperature for about 30 minutes. Unlike meat like beef or pork, fish will begin to break down if marinated for too long.
