What is the Best Chicken Marinade?

The best chicken marinades are made with a combination of an acid ingredient like vinegar or citrus juice, a fat like vegetable oil, and additional ingredients to add flavor like honey, garlic, and herbs.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • soy sauce
  • honey
  • garlic
  • rice vinegar
  • vegetable oil
  • sesame oil

How to Make Asian Chicken Marinade

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a small mixing bowl and whisk well.
  • Transfer the marinade to a resealable freezer bag. Add the chicken pieces and remove as much excess air as possible. Seal the bag and place it in the refrigerator in a large bowl or on a tray to catch any drippings.
  • Marinate the chicken for two to 24 hours.
  • When ready to serve, remove the chicken from the marinade and cook on a hot grill until done. Discard the marinade or boil it in a saucepan to serve as a sauce.

How to Freeze Asian Chicken Marinades

After preparing the marinade, place it in a resealable freezer bag and remove as much excess air as possible before sealing. Label the bag with the date and place it flat in the freezer until you’re ready to use it.

Cook Asian Marinade As A Sauce

  • Place the leftover marinade in a small saucepan and bring it to a boil.
  • Continue to boil the sauce for one minute and then turn off the heat.
  • Let the sauce cool, and then taste. Add additional water, stock, or seasonings as desired.
  • Serve alongside the chicken.

How Long Should I Marinate Chicken?

Chicken can be marinated anywhere from 30 minutes to six hours. The longer the chicken is marinated, the more flavor it will have. If the marinade you’re using doesn’t contain citrus juice or vinegar, the chicken can marinate for up to 24 hours.

Should I Tenderize Chicken Before Marinating?

Most chicken doesn’t need to be tenderized, however if you want the chicken pieces to be of uniform thickness, you can use a meat mallet before marinating.
