How to Make Meatloaf Sauce

This quick and easy glaze couldn’t be easier! It’s made with just 3 ingredients you’re likely to have on hand in your pantry – ketchup, BBQ sauce, and brown sugar. All you have to do is combine the ingredients, add salt, pepper and any other desired seasonings, and spread it on your favorite meatloaf!

  • For a spicier sauce, add chili powder, cayenne pepper, or red pepper flakes to the glaze. 
  • Make your own BBQ sauce or use your favorite store-bought brand. 
  • Add a zippy punch of flavor with dijon mustard.

How to Store Meatloaf Glaze

Leftover glaze should be placed into a sealed container and refrigerated for up to 5 days. 

Can you Freeze Meatloaf?

Meatloaf can be frozen before it’s cooked. Prepare the meatloaf as you normally would before cooking. Wrap the meatloaf in plastic wrap and foil, and place it into an airtight container. Properly stored meatloaf can remain in the freezer for up to 6 months. When ready to use, the meatloaf should be thawed in the fridge until fully defrosted before baking. 

How Long Does it Take to Cook Meatloaf?

Cooking times vary based on the size of the meatloaf. The internal temperature must reach  160°F before eating. Most meatloafs will need to cook uncovered for about 40 minutes in a  375°F oven. The glaze or sauce can be added at this point, and then continue to cook the meatloaf for another 15-20 minutes.

What is the Best Meat for Meatloaf?

For the best results, use ground beef that is 85% or 90% lean meat. The other ingredients used in the loaf will help to keep it moist and juicy. Avoid extra lean meat which can become dry during the cooking process.

Homemade meatloaf is tender, juicy, and full of flavor. While you’re baking your meatloaf, there’s plenty of time to prepare a perfect side that complements this hearty dinner. Easy Meatloaf Glaze Recipe

This sweet and tangy meatloaf glaze comes together in minutes and has just a few simple ingredients! You’ll love the flavor it adds to your meatloaf.

Ingredients 

  • 1/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup BBQ sauce
  • 2-3 tablespoons light brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon dijon mustard
  • salt & pepper, to taste

Instructions 

  • In a small bowl, stir the ketchup, BBQ sauce, and brown sugar together until well mixed. Add the dijon mustard, salt, and pepper if desired.
  • Pour the glaze over top of the meatloaf and continue to bake until the meatloaf is fully cooked.

Notes

For a bit of heat, add a pinch of cayenne pepper, red pepper flakes, or a dash or two of hot sauce to the glaze.
