(Note: Full recipe is at the bottom of the post)

How to Make Top Sirloin Roast

  • Bring the roast to room temperature. Mix the butter with the garlic, thyme, rosemary, salt and pepper. Use this mixture to cover the top of the roast.
  • Put the vegetables in the bottom of the roasting pan and place the roast in the center of the vegetables.
  • Bake the roast at 450°F, uncovered, for 15-20 minutes, until the top is seared and brown.
  • Reduce the oven temperature to 325°F and cover the roasting pan with a lid.
  • Cook the roast until it’s 10°F shy of the target internal temperature. The roast will continue to cook after it’s removed from the oven. The best way to check for doneness is to use an instant-read thermometer.
  • Remove the roast from the oven but leave it covered in the roasting pan. Let it rest for 20 minutes before slicing.
  • Serve, and enjoy!

Is Top Sirloin Roast Expensive?

Compared to other beef roasts, top sirloin falls in the price range of medium to high. It isn’t overly expensive and is tender and delicious when properly prepared.

Tips And Tricks

  • Let the roast and butter come to room temperature before starting.
  • Be sure to include the seasoned butter. It adds incredible flavor to the roast.
  • Feel free to use your own combination of seasonings.
  • Keep a close eye on the temperature of the roast. It can easily overcook and become tough.
  • Remove the roast from the oven when it’s about 10°F short of the target internal temperature. The roast will continue to cook even after it’s removed from the heat.
  • Add your favorite veggies to the mix. Butternut squash, turnips, and sweet potatoes are good options.

How Long to Cook Top Sirloin Roast

The cooking time is determined by the size of the roast and the level of doneness. As a general rule, aim for about 20 minutes per pound of meat. Refer to the chart below for a guideline of internal temperature based on doneness. The best way to check for doneness is to use an instant-read thermometer.

Because the roast will continue to cook even after it’s removed from the heat, aim to take it out of the oven when it’s about 10°F shy of the target internal temperature.

Top Sirloin Roast Doneness

  • Rare: 120°F-125°F (red and bloody).
  • Medium-rare: 130°F-135°F (pink center and brown towards the outside).
  • Medium: 140°F (mostly brown with a light pink center).
  • Well-done: 150°F-160°F (brown all the way through).

How To Serve Top Sirloin Roast

Top sirloin roast is a versatile cut that can be served with just about anything. Classic sides include loaded baked potato, scalloped potatoes, rice, pasta, salads, and veggies.

Can You Freeze Top Sirloin Roast?

Yes. Let the roast cool to room temperature and then freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Frozen leftovers should be thawed in the fridge overnight before reheating.

How To Reheat Top Sirloin Roast

It’s best to reheat the top sirloin roast in the oven or on the stove. Wrap the roast in foil and set the oven to 350°F. Place on a baking tray and heat for about 20 minutes or so depending on the size of the roast.

On the stovetop, place the roast in a skillet and add a splash of stock or water if it seems dry. Cover and cook over low to medium until hot.

If you’re short on time, place the roast beef on a microwave-safe plate and heat at reduced power for a minute or two until hot.

Is Top Sirloin Roast The Same As Sirloin Steak?

No. Top sirloin roast is much larger and thicker than sirloin steak and is best cooked using dry heat. Sirloin steak is a thinner cut of meat that cooks quickly and can be prepared on the stovetop or the grill over high heat.

Is Top Sirloin Roast Tough?

When cooked properly, top sirloin roast is moist and tender. If it’s overcooked it can turn out tough and chewy.
