What Is Teriyaki Marinade?

Originally from Japan, teriyaki marinade is a combination of sweet, tangy, and salty flavors. It’s typically made with soy sauce, sugar, water, Worcestershire sauce, garlic and seasonings.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • soy sauce
  • Worcestershire sauce
  • brown sugar
  • water
  • fresh garlic
  • onion powder
  • powdered ginger

(Note: Full recipe is at the bottom of the post)

How to Make Teriyaki Marinade

  • Combine all of the ingredients in a large saucepan.
  • Bring to a boil and then leave to simmer for a few minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Remove from the heat and set aside to cool.

Is Teriyaki Marinade The Same As Teriyaki Sauce?

No. The two are similar but teriyaki sauce is thicker and typically added to foods like stir-fries or used as a dipping sauce. Teriyaki marinade has a thinner consistency and adds flavor to raw meat or veggies.

Can You Use Teriyaki Marinade As A Sauce?

Yes, by adding cornstarch and water. Stir 1 tablespoon of cornstarch into ½ cup of water in a small saucepan. Simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until thickened.

Does Teriyaki Marinade Tenderize Meat?

Yes. Teriyaki marinade added to raw meat acts as a tenderizer. As a guideline, marinate red meat like pork or beef for 6-8 hours and chicken for 4-6 hours.

How To Store Teriyaki Marinade

Leftovers should be cooled to room temperature, placed in an airtight container, and stored in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.

Can You Freeze Teriyaki Marinade?

Yes. Place the cooled leftovers into a freezer-safe container and store them in the freezer for up to 3 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before using.
