What Is Pork Gravy?

Pork gravy is made from the drippings of roast pork. It’s rich in meaty flavors and comes together with a handful of simple ingredients. Serve it with roast pork, mashed potatoes, pot pies, or your favorite veggies.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • butter
  • flour
  • pan drippings
  • salt and pepper

(Note: Full recipe is at the bottom of the post)

How to Make Pork Gravy

  • Melt the butter in a saucepan on the stove. Stir in the flour and let it brown for one minute, stirring frequently. This mixture is called a roux.
  • Add the pan drippings as well as any extra broth to the butter and flour mixture. Use a whisk to evenly distribute the flour and remove any lumps. Season with salt and pepper.
  • Simmer the gravy for three to four minutes to allow the flavors to meld.

How To Serve Pork Gravy

Pork gravy is flavorful and pairs well with many dishes. Serve it on sliced roast pork or pork chops, mashed potatoes, meat pies, noodles, and veggies.

Tips And Tricks

  • If you don’t have enough drippings, add vegetable, chicken, or beef broth to bring it to the 2 cups required in the recipe.
  • Using a whisk instead of a spoon will produce a gravy that’s smooth and free of lumps.

Can I Make Pork Gravy Without Drippings?

Yes. If you don’t have pork drippings, you can make the gravy with vegetable, chicken, or beef broth. The gravy won’t have the same meaty flavor but can still be delicious. Try adding minced garlic, onion, and fresh herbs for more flavor.

How Can I Lighten Up My Pork Gravy?

Pork drippings can be fatty. You can use a fat separator to remove the fat from the drippings. If you’re using broth, choose one that is lower in sodium.

How Do You Thicken Thin Gravy?

If the gravy isn’t as thick as you’d like, you can let it simmer longer until reduced or add more flour. Make a paste by blending equal amounts of flour and butter until smooth. Whisk into the gravy 1 tablespoon at a time until smooth and thickened to your liking.

What Can I Use Instead Of Flour In Pork Gravy?

Use cornstarch in place of flour. Halve the amount of flour in the recipe and replace it with cornstarch.

Can I Make A Gluten-Free Pork Gravy?

Yes. Using cornstarch instead of flour is a gluten-free option. Halve the amount of flour in the recipe and replace it with cornstarch. Use a whisk to ensure that the mixture is free of lumps.

Is There A Pork Gravy Mix?

Yes. Pork gravy mix is available at most large grocery stores, typically in the aisles where soups and sauces are sold. The gravy mix is usually sold in packets, cans, or jars.

What’s The Difference Between Pork Gravy And Brown Gravy?

Pork gravy is a type of brown gravy. Brown gravy refers to any kind of gravy made with roasted meat drippings.

How To Store Pork Gravy

Let the gravy cool to room temperature, transfer to an airtight container, and store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Can You Freeze Pork Gravy?

Yes. Let the leftovers cool and then freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Frozen leftovers should be thawed in the fridge overnight before reheating.

How To Reheat Pork Gravy

The best way to reheat gravy is on the stovetop. Place the gravy in a saucepan and heat over medium-low, whisking often until smooth and hot. Pork gravy can also be reheated in the microwave at reduced power.
