Tips and Tricks

  • Removing the skin and/or bones is entirely up to you.
  • Diced onions or bell peppers can be quickly sauteed and then added to the salmon mixture for flavor and texture.
  • Add a tablespoon of minced fresh chives or a pinch of oregano, thyme, or cayenne pepper for additional flavor and a hint of spice.
  • If the patties are too wet and won’t hold together, add more cracker crumbs.

How to Store Old Fashioned Salmon Patties

Let the patties cool to room temperature, transfer to an airtight container, and then store in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Can You Freeze Old Fashioned Salmon Patties?

Yes. Freeze the cooled patties on a piece of parchment or waxed paper in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Frozen salmon patties should be defrosted in the fridge overnight before reheating.

How to Reheat Old Fashioned Salmon Patties

The best way to reheat salmon patties is in the oven. Place the salmon patties on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in a 350°F oven for about 4-6 minutes or until hot. Salmon patties can also be reheated in the microwave at reduced power until hot.

What’s The Difference Between A Croquette And A Patty?

Croquette is a French word and is essentially the same thing as a patty. Recipes vary with some croquettes including mashed potatoes and breadcrumbs instead of cracker crumbs.

How To Serve Old Fashioned Salmon Patties

These salmon patties are so versatile! They can be served as appetizers with a creamy dipping sauce, as burgers on buns topped with mayo, lettuce and sliced tomatoes, or as a main dish with rice, potatoes, pasta, and veggies.

How Do I Keep My Salmon Patties From Falling Apart?

Eggs and cracker crumbs act as binders in this recipe. If you find the patties aren’t firm enough, add cracker crumbs. It’s also important to drain the canned salmon well so it isn’t overly wet. When frying the patties, let them cook on each side, undisturbed, until it’s time to carefully flip them to the other side.

What Can I Use Instead Of Egg In Salmon Patties?

An egg substitute like chia seeds, ground flax seeds, or gelatin powder can be used in these salmon patties. Combine 2 tablespoons of chia seeds, ground flax seeds, or gelatin powder with 6 tablespoons of water. Stir to combine.
