How to Make Fried Bread
Step 1: Make the dough
- Mix together flour, yeast, sugar, salt, warm water, and olive oil.
- Use your hands to mix the dough until it begins to come together.
- Knead the dough by hand for about 5 minutes until it’s soft and elastic. Place the dough in a greased mixing bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise for about 30 minutes or until doubled in size.
Step 2: Fry and Coat the Bread
- Add oil to a deep fryer or a large skillet over medium-high heat. Heat until the oil reaches 350°F.
- Transfer the dough to a flat surface dusted with flour. Cut the dough into 12 pieces and flatten each piece into a disc shape.
- When the oil is ready, gently stretch each piece of dough and carefully place into the oil. Do this in batches to ensure that the pan is not overcrowded.
- Cook the dough for about 2 minutes or until the bottom is golden brown.
- Gently flip the dough and fry on the other side for another 2 minutes or until golden brown.
- Transfer the fried bread to a paper towel lined plate.
- Brush the fried dough with melted butter.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar and ground cinnamon as desired. Serve and enjoy!
Tips and Tricks
- Keep the oil at 350°F for the best results.
- The dough will expand as it cooks. It’s a good idea to fry the bread in batches so they don’t stick together.
- If desired, use a fine sieve to sprinkle the fried bread with powdered sugar.
Why Is My Fried Bread Hard?
If your fried bread is hard, it may have been overmixed or kneaded for too long. Another cause could be oil that isn’t hot enough.
How To Reheat Fried Bread
Leftover fried bread can be reheated in a 350°F oven. Wrap each piece of fry bread in foil and bake for about 15 minutes until heated through. You can also reheat fried bread in the microwave but the outside will lose its crispy texture.
