Edible Cookie Dough for One is an eggless single-serving dessert that takes minutes to make. It’s a nostalgic and perfect treat made with heat-treated flour and no eggs.
Edible cookie dough can be used in a variety of delicious ways. Besides being able to eat it on its own, it can also be used in cookies, brownies, as a frosting or used in ice cream bars. It’s easy to make with just a few ingredients.
What is Edible Cookie Dough?
Edible cookie dough is just what it sounds like – unbaked cookie dough that’s safe and delicious to eat. While regular cookie dough contains ingredients that could potentially make you sick, edible cookie dough is 100% safe to eat raw!
What’s the Difference Between Cookie Dough and Edible Cookie Dough?
Most of the ingredients in edible cookie dough can also be found in regular cookie dough, but there are a few differences that make this version safe to eat. Notably, edible cookie dough is made without eggs and excludes rising agents like baking soda or baking powder. Lastly, before making your dough, you’ll be cooking the flour, which you wouldn’t need to do with regular cookie dough.
How to Make Eggless Cookie Dough Safe to Eat?
Eating regular cookie dough can cause you to get sick for a couple of reasons. Firstly, regular cookie dough contains raw eggs which can pose a salmonella risk. Additionally, cookie dough contains raw flour, which the CDC strongly advises against eating.
Edible cookie dough is made with no eggs, thus removing the salmonella risk. You’ll also be baking the flour beforehand, so you won’t be consuming potentially risky raw flour.
Ingredients You’ll Need and Substitutes
- All-Purpose Flour: Your preferred brand of regular, all-purpose flour is just fine to use for this recipe. If you like, you can also use a gluten-free alternative such as almond or oat flour.
- Unsalted Butter: We recommend using unsalted butter for this recipe. If you only have salted butter, be sure to reduce or eliminate additional salt from your dough.
- Brown Sugar: Though brown sugar provides the best taste and texture for your cookie dough, you can use white granulated sugar if that’s what you have on hand.
- Granulated Sugar: You’ll need a bit of granulated sugar for this recipe, but go ahead and use brown sugar or a sugar alternative if you prefer.
- Milk: Any dairy or non-dairy milk can be used in your cookie dough.
- Vanilla Extract: Pure vanilla extract is best, but you can use vanilla flavoring in a pinch.
- Mini Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips
- Salt: Omit or reduce the salt if you’re using a salted butter

Tips & Tricks
- Heat treat the flour so that it’s safe to eat: With baked cookies, the flour is cooked, which eliminates the risk of you getting sick. For raw cookie dough, be sure to heat the flour to ensure it’s safe to eat.
- Make sure the butter is softened before mixing: It’s nearly impossible to combine cold, hard butter with your other ingredients. Soften butter by leaving it out of the fridge overnight or giving it a quick zap in the microwave.
- This cookie dough will harden up when stored in the fridge. You’ll need to bring it to temperature before serving.
Cookie dough tastes best at room temperature. If you’ve stored it in the fridge, give it some time to warm up to room temperature before eating.
Variations
