How to Make Beer Batter Fish

  • Combine the batter ingredients and mix until a smooth batter forms. Set it aside for 30 minutes.
  • Add 2-3 inches of oil to a heavy saucepan and heat until it reaches 375°F. Line a large plate or platter with paper towels and set it aside.
  • Combine the flouring ingredients in a small bowl and mix well.
  • Dredge two fish fillets in the flour mixture and tap lightly to remove the excess flour.
  • Dip the floured fish fillets into the batter ensuring that they’re covered with a thick coating of batter.
  • Gently place the fillets into the heated oil.
  • Cook for about 4 minutes per side or until medium golden brown.
  • Remove and drain the fish on the prepared paper towels. Repeat with the remaining filets and serve.

Best Beer to Use

Any beer can be used for the batter. Just keep in mind that if the beer has a strong flavor it will transfer to the batter as well. Light ales and lagers with a good amount of carbonation are always a good choice.

Should I Put An Egg In My Beer Batter?

Adding egg tends to make the batter cakey and chewy. A batter without any eggs will be lighter and crispier.

Should I Let The Beer Batter Rest?

Yes, it’s best to let the batter rest for at least 30 minutes before using it. This allows the carbonation in the beer to activate the baking powder, resulting in a crispier and lighter batter.
