What Do Bamboo Shoots Taste Like?
Bamboo shoots have a texture that’s both tender and crunchy. They have a slightly sweet flavor when cooked and are a delicious addition to stir-fries and other dishes.
Health Benefits of Bamboo Shoots
We love bamboo shoots because they’re an excellent source of potassium and help to promote heart health. They’re also high in vitamins and minerals including iron, thiamine, niacin, and phosphorus.
How To Store Bamboo Shoots
Fresh bamboo shoots should be stored in the fridge for up to two weeks. Note that the shoots may begin to taste bitter after two weeks. Boiled bamboo shoots can be stored in the freezer for up to five months, although the texture may not be as crisp when thawed. Canned bamboo shoots can last for up to a year. Check the expiration date on the can before eating.
How to Tell If They Have Gone Bad
If the bamboo shoots smell off or similar to ammonia they should be discarded. Fresh bamboo should always be stored with the outer shell intact to help retain freshness.
How Do You Use Canned Bamboo Shoots In Cooking?
Before using canned bamboo shoots, rinse them well with water. You can then slice the bamboo shoots and add them to stir fries and other dishes. Note that because canned bamboo shoots are already cooked, they can be added toward the end of the cooking time to simply heat through.
