This copycat McDonald’s Frappe is a real deal: it turns iced coffee into a delicious milkshake. You won’t believe how simple it is to make at home. If you’re an ice cream lover, you probably already have most of the ingredients.

What Is A Frappe?

A Frappe is a blended coffee beverage made with ice, milk, and sweetened coffee concentrate. McDonald’s Frappe comes in several flavors, including caramel, Oreo, mocha, and vanilla.

Mcdonald’s Frappe Flavors

McDonald’s Caramel Frappe

If you’ve never mixed caramel and coffee, you’ll have to give this Frappé a try. It’s a deliciously sweet way to offset any bitterness the coffee may bring, creating an extra refreshing drink.

McDonald’s Oreo Frappe

This is a delightful blend of chocolate, coffee, and Oreo cookie pieces, topped with whipped light cream and more Oreo cookies on top.

McDonald’s Mocha Frappe

Mocha is a classic flavor combination. Chocolate and coffee were meant to be. This Frappé adds chocolate sauce into the mix for your chocolatey fix.

McDonald’s Chocolate Chip Frappe

And for an even further burst of chocolate, this Frappé adds chocolate chips into the mix for an added burst of flavor with a subtle bit of crunch.

Iced Coffee Frappe

This is your classic Frappé, with no added flavor. If you enjoy the taste of coffee on its own, this is the best bet for you. Just a classic coffee, complemented by the vanilla ice cream and that’s it. Plain, simple, but delicious.

Ingredients And Substitutes

  • Ice: Ice is what will separate your Frappé from a plain old milkshake. The more you add, the thicker your Frappé will be, so start with one cup and then add more to your liking.
  • Vanilla Ice Cream: Ice cream is going to add to the thick texture of your Frappé. For a true copycat recipe, stick with vanilla. But if you want to get a little more adventurous, experiment with using your favorite flavor.
  • Milk: This recipe will work best with 2% milk, but of course, you can substitute it out for a dairy-free version. I recommend using soy as an alternative because it won’t add any distinct flavor, but once again, experiment to customize your drink.
  • Brewed Coffee: Your favorite at-home brew will work fine. Make sure to chill your coffee before you make your frappé, as adding it in hot will start to melt your ice cream.
  • Caramel Sauce: Use caramel sauce for Caramel Frappé. You can also use chocolate sauce or chocolate chips for Mocha Frappé or Chocolate Chip Frappé.
  • Whipped Cream: Don’t forget the whipped cream to decorate! While an optional step, a good twist of canned whipped cream on top will really add to the visuals of your drink.

How To Make Mcdonald’s Frappuccino

Photo showing adding all ingredients into the blender.
  1. Prepare coffee and let it chill in the refrigerator.
  2. Add ice, ice cream, coffee, milk, and caramel sauce into a blender.
  3. Blend on low speed for about 30 seconds, and then on a max speed for about 20 seconds or until the mixture is evenly smooth.
  4. Pour the mixture into individual glasses and top with whipped cream.
  5. Drizzle with caramel or chocolate sauce. Serve and enjoy immediately.

Tips And Tricks

  • Chill your coffee: Adding hot coffee to your frappé will start to melt the ice cream before you even get a chance to blend it. Give your coffee enough time to chill in the fridge, you can even leave it overnight if you want your Frappé first thing!
  • Add your ice gradually: This is how you can control the consistency of your drink, so don’t add it in all at once. Start with about a cup of ice, then blend. Add more ice if you would like it thicker, just a touch at a time, blending it fully before adding more.

How To Store Mcdonald’s Caramel Frappe?

If you have leftovers of McDonald’s Caramel Frappe, you can store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. However, the texture and flavor may change over time, so it’s best to consume it as soon as possible. If you’re planning to store it, make sure to keep it in an airtight container to prevent ice crystals from forming.

Mcdonald’s Frappe vs Starbucks’ Frappuccino

While a McDonald’s Frappé is more of a milkshake with a hint of coffee, the Starbucks Frappuccino is more of a coffee drink with a milkshake element. They contain pretty similar ingredients in different quantities, so you may just have to make both to compare.

McDonald’s Frappe Menu Options

Apart from a few core Frappe flavors mentioned above, McDonald’s occasionally introduces limited-time or seasonal Frappes to keep things exciting. Be sure to check your local McDonald’s menu for any current offerings.

Additionally, you can customize your Frappe by adjusting the sweetness level, opting for non-dairy milk, or omitting the whipped cream for a slightly lighter treat.

FAQ

Is there caffeine in McDonald’s Frappe?

Yes, a classic McDonald’s Frappé does have caffeine, but the beauty of this at-home version is you can make it however you would like. Use decaf if you’re watching your caffeine, or leave out the coffee if your kids want to give it a try.

Is McDonald’s Frappe bad for you?

Okay, so maybe a Frappé has roughly the same amount of calories as a hamburger, but there’s no real surprise in the ingredients here. The sauces add extra sugar, and ice cream can pack on the calories, but other than that, it’s just coffee and milk. The beverage certainly doesn’t add much to a healthy diet, but it’s also not the worst thing you can reach for as an occasional treat.

How much is McDonald’s Frappe?

The price may vary slightly depending on the location, but Frappés come in three sizes and you can expect to pay anywhere between $2.40 – $3.40 at regular price.

How many calories are in a McDonald’s Frappe?

The calorie count varies based on the flavor, size, and any additional toppings or modifications. On average, a small Frappe contains about 240-300 calories, while a larger size may have more.

Prep: 5 minutes
Total: 5 minutes
Servings: 2

Ingredients

  • 2 cups ice, (plus more for serving. Start with 1 cup of ice and gradually add more to your preferred consistency. Note more ice will make your frappe thicker)
  • 1 cup vanilla ice cream
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup brewed coffee, chilled
  • 1/3 cup caramel sauce, (or chocolate syrup, or chocolate chip)
  • whipped cream

Instructions

  • Prepare coffee (brewed coffee or instant coffee) and let it chill in the refrigerator.
  • Add ice, ice cream, coffee, milk, and caramel sauce (or chocolate syrup/chocolate chip) into a blender.
  • Blend on low speed for about 30 seconds, and then on a max speed for about 20 seconds or until the mixture is evenly smooth. (Taste your frappe, if you'd like to make it thicker, add more ice cubes and blend again.)
  • Pour the mixture into individual glasses and top with whipped cream.
  • Drizzle with caramel sauce (or chocolate syrup). Serve and enjoy immediately.

Notes

  • Make your coffee ahead of time and let it chill before making the drink.
  • It’s best to start with less ice, and gradually add more to reach your desired consistency. Note that more ice makes a thicker drink.

      1. No idea where you get 291 kcal from, as 1/3 cup of caramel sauce alone has that before you add milk and ice cream. Delicious all the same.
