    What is Cheez Whiz?

It’s branded cheese sauce or spread with a bright orange color produced by Kraft Foods. You’ll be able to find it in most grocery stores in the U.S..

    Is Cheese Whiz Real Cheese?

When Cheez Whiz was first introduced to the market, it was made with real cheese. But nowadays most store-bought Cheez Whiz has little-to-no real cheese.

This homemade cheez whiz is rich, flavourful, and so easy to make. It’s made with real cheese and so much better than the store-bought version.

    Ingredients You’ll Need

    • cheddar cheese
    • cream cheese
    • whole milk
    • garlic powder
    • onion powder
    • mustard powder
    • turmeric
    • kosher salt
    • granulated sugar
    • cornstarch

How to Make Cheez Whiz at Home

    1. In a small mixing bowl, put garlic powder, onion powder, mustard powder, turmeric, sugar, salt and cornstarch. Mix well.
    2. In a saucepan over medium low heat, add the milk and cream cheese.
    3. Bring to a simmer, whisking frequently, until the cream cheese has dissolved into the milk.
    4. Add the seasoning mixture into the cream cheese mixture. Continue to cook for about a minute or until it thickens.
    5. Remove from heat and stir in the shredded cheese.
    6. Fold the cheese into the hot liquid until completely melted.

Can I Substitute Velveeta for Cheez Whiz?

Yes, in most recipes, you can use Velveeta cheese to replace cheez whiz with a 1:1 ratio, as velveeta cheese is similar to cheez whiz in terms of taste.

However, while Velveeta comes in a solid form, Cheez Whiz has a creamy, melted texture straight out of the container.

    Tips and Tricks

    • The color of your cheez whiz will be different based on the different cheddar cheese you use.
    • Turmeric adds a nice orange color to your cheez whiz. You can skip it if you don’t have any. It won’t affect the taste or texture.

How Long Does Homemade Cheez Whiz Last?

Let it cool to room temperature, and then add it to an air-tight container. It will last for about 3 days in the refrigerator. The cheese will harden in the fridge, and you can reheat it in a saucepan before serving.

Made this to use for cheesesteaks and made them better than whiz… family said it made them “insane”. Thanks for a simple but great recipe!
