Perfect Fried Avocado

If you think avocado can only be enjoyed in salads, tacos, or as guacamole, you’re in for a treat. This recipe for fried avocado is the perfect party food.
Serve this fried avocado the next time you’re hosting game day! It’s easy to make and extra delicious served with a dipping sauce.
Ingredients You’ll Need
- avocados
- all-purpose flour
- ground cumin
- chili powder
- Salt and pepper
- eggs
- panko bread crumbs
- vegetable oil

How to Make Fried Avocado
- Whisk together the flour, cumin, chili powder, salt and pepper in a small bowl.
- In a second shallow dish whisk together the eggs.
- Place the panko breadcrumbs in a third shallow dish.
- Set aside a baking sheet on hand for the breaded avocado slices. Line a second baking sheet with two layers of paper towels for the deep fried avocados.
- Heat the oil in a 4-quart saute pan or a large pot to 360°F.
- Cut the avocados in half and remove the pits. Slice the halves into ½-inch thick slices to make 10 slices per avocado.
- Working with a few slices at a time, dredge each slice into the flour and coat all sides. Shake off the excess flour.
- Transfer the slices to the egg mixture, turning to coat well. Lift the slices and let the excess egg run off.
- Transfer the slices to the panko and turn to coat well while gently pressing the panko to the avocado. Transfer the coated slices to the unlined baking sheet and repeat with the remaining avocado.
- Carefully place half of the avocado slices into the preheated oil and fry for about 1 minute until browned on one side. Turn and fry for an additional minute until golden brown.
- Remove the slices with tongs or a slotted spoon and let the excess oil drip back into the pan. Transfer the slices to the paper towel lined baking sheet to drain. Season with salt to taste. Serve warm with dipping sauce.
Tips and Tricks
- Choose good quality ripe avocados that aren’t too soft. The flesh should be soft when gently pressed.
- Preheat the oil to the temperature indicated in the recipe. If the oil isn’t hot enough, the breading will soak up too much oil. A deep-fry thermometer will help to maintain the correct temperature.
- Fry the avocado in batches so it doesn’t clump together while frying.
- Fried avocado is best enjoyed hot. Serve it with your favorite dipping sauce.
How Long Will Fried Avocado Last?
Avocado browns easily so serve this fried avocado hot from the fryer. If you do have leftovers, place them in an airtight container and store in the fridge for 1-2 days. To reheat the avocados, use an air fryer or a toaster oven to crisp them up. It’s not recommended to reheat fried avocado in the microwave.
How to Bake Avocado Fries
If you prefer to bake the avocado instead of deep-frying, follow these tips:
- Place the oven rack in the upper 1/3 of the oven. Preheat the oven to 425°F.
- Dredge the avocado slices in the flour mixture, egg and then panko.
- Transfer the coated avocado slices to a greased baking sheet. Spray the tops lightly with cooking spray.
- Bake for about 11 minutes. For a golden brown color, broil the avocado for about 1 minute. Keep a close eye on the avocado so they don’t burn.
Can You Cook Avocado?
Yes. Avocado is typically eaten raw but can also be fried, roasted, or grilled. Note that heating avocado can cause it to become mushy and brown. Coating the avocado with a little lemon juice and olive oil can help to reduce browning.
Are Avocado Fries Healthy?
Avocados are an excellent source of potassium and are high in fiber and folate. For a healthier version of avocado fries, they can be baked in the oven instead of deep fried in oil.
