We’ll share with you everything you need to know about this common topping and whether or not it’s right for you if you are on a keto diet.

What Is Sour Cream Made Of?

Sour cream is composed of 3 main ingredients: whole milk, cream, and either distilled white vinegar or lemon juice. Buttermilk can also be used instead of milk or cream to make sour cream.

Is Sour Cream Keto?

Full-fat sour cream is high in fat. It has way more fat than carbohydrates, so it is considered keto-safe.

But be careful. Low-fat sour cream is not quite the same. It is higher in carbs and is not recommended for keto diets.

How Many Net Carbs In Sour Cream?

Full-fat sour cream has 0.6g of net carbs per tablespoon, according to the USDA. The full-fat version is the most keto-friendly sour cream to consume.

It is common to see the net carbs listed as 1g per 2 tablespoons. This is because most U.S. nutrition labels round up to the nearest whole number.

Nutrition Facts for Different Types of Sour Cream (Full Fat, Low Fat and Non-Fat)

Here are the nutrition facts per 3.5 ounces of each kind of sour cream. Note that different brands have different nutrition values. So read the label carefully if you are on a keto-diet.

How to Eat Sour Cream on A Keto Diet?

To maintain your keto diet, it is best to stick with full-fat sour cream. It makes an excellent dip or topping.

How Much Sour Cream Can I Have on Keto?

To keep your carb count low enough to remain in a state of ketosis, you should consume no more than 4 tablespoons of full-fat sour cream in a given day. This amounts to roughly 2.6g of net carbs. Respecting the quantity will ensure you don’t get pushed out of ketosis.
