- 8 pieces cube steak about 2-3 pounds
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 cup flour
- 1 onion sliced
- 2 cups button mushrooms sliced
- 1 can cream of mushroom soup
- 2 ounces onion soup mix 1 packet
- 1 ounce brown gravy mix 1 packet
- 1 cup beef stock
- 2 teaspoons thyme
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch optional
- 1 tablespoon water optional
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add the olive oil.
Dredge the cube steak in the flour and add to the hot oil. Cook for about 5 minutes or until the meat is golden in color. You may want to cook the steak in batches to avoid overcrowding the skillet.
Place half the onion and mushrooms in the bottom of the crock pot. Place the browned cube steaks on top. Top with the remaining onions and mushrooms.
Whisk together the cream of mushroom soup, onion soup mix, gravy packet, beef stock, and thyme in a medium bowl. Add to the slow cooker.
Cover and cook for 2 to 4 hours on high or 4 to 6 hours on low until the steak is tender and cooked through.
For a thicker sauce, make a slurry by mixing 1 tablespoon of cornstarch with 1 tablespoon of water. Pour into the sauce and cook (stirring constantly) for about 10-15 minutes until the sauce has thickened.
