In today’s post, we’re taking a closer look at crawfish, including what they taste like and how they compare to lobster and shrimp.

What is a Crawfish?

Crawfish are small crustaceans that live on the ocean floor. They’re also known as crayfish and look like miniature sized lobsters. Crawfish are found in both the Northern and Southern hemisphere. Most of the crawfish consumed in the US come from Louisiana.

What Do Crawfish Taste Like?

Crawfish have a flavor that’s described as a combination of lobster, crab, and shrimp. They’re more tender than shrimp and have a sweet, salty, and mineral-like flavor.

Best Way to Eat Crawfish

If you’ve never eaten crawfish before, you might think it’s tricky to eat. Once you get the hang of it, it’s easy to enjoy crawfish without wasting any of the meat. Remove the head by gently twisting and pulling. If you like, you can suck the savory juices from the head of the crawfish, as many do in Louisiana. Discard the head if you prefer to skip this part.

Next, crack the shell of the tail by pinching and pulling to reveal the tender meat inside. You’ll want to devein the crawfish by holding the tail in one hand and using the other to peel back the outer layer of skin and remove the vein. Now you can enjoy the succulent meat from the tail of the crawfish.

Crawfish vs Lobsters

Crawfish and lobsters are very similar in appearance. The main difference is lobsters are much larger. They’re also similar in flavor. Lobster tails are typically cooked in boiling water, while the entire crawfish is boiled whole. Crawfish are less salty in flavor compared to lobster.

Does Crawfish Taste Fishy?

Crawfish are technically classified as a type of crustacean. They’re flavor is more similar to lobster, shrimp, and crab than to fish.

What Tastes Better Shrimp Or Crawfish?

The answer depends on your preference. Crawfish have a slightly more subtle and sweet flavor that’s similar to lobster. Shrimp are slightly stronger in flavor and are also a bit salty.
