A fortified Italian wine, sweet vermouth is a strong liqueur with a unique blend of aromas and flavors. It pairs perfectly with bourbon, gin, and other liqueurs and is a crucial element of a traditional Manhattan cocktail.

Delicious, sweet, and slightly spiced, here are some of our favorite vermouth cocktail recipes for your next happy hour.

What Is Sweet Vermouth Used For?

Sweet and slightly spiced, this Italian liqueur comes in different variations: dry and sweet. Sweet vermouth is ideal for cocktails and even dessert recipes.

What Mixes Well With Vermouth?

Paired with scotch, bourbon, or dark rum, sweet vermouth is a perfect choice since it balances the flavors. For a lighter drink, blend with alcohol like vodka, gin, or tequila, dry vermouth is best. Think Manhattan, Vesper, or a dry martini.

Can You Drink Sweet Vermouth Straight Up?

If you like the bitter taste of sweet vermouth, then you can drink it all on its own. Of course, it pairs nicely with other ingredients for a softer, tastier cocktail.

This classy, elegant drink is reminiscent of any cocktail party from the 1920s onward. The Hanky Panky cocktail is a simple drink that will really wow your guests!
Prep: 5 minutes
Total: 5 minutes
Servings: 1 drink

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces gin
  • 1 1/2 ounces sweet vermouth
  • 1/8 ounce fernet ½ teaspoon, see note
  • 1 cup ice cubes
  • 1 orange, for the garnish

Instructions

  • Place the cocktail glass in the freezer to chill.
  • Add the ice to a mixing glass. Add the gin, sweet vermouth and fernet, stirring until chilled.
  • Strain the mixture into the chilled cocktail glass.
  • Cut a long, narrow strip of orange peel using a channel knife (or paring knife) over the top of the glass. This allows the essential oils of the orange to flavor the drink.
  • Add the orange twist to the rim of the glass with part of it dangling into the drink. Serve immediately.
