What Is Sourdough Bread?

Sourdough is a type of bread made with fermented dough. Compared to regular bread, sourdough does not contain packaged yeast. Instead, flour, salt, and water are fermented over several days before being added to other ingredients to create the bread. Sourdough bread has a unique tangy flavor and a soft and chewy texture.

Ingredients You’ll Need

  • Bread: Use an oval-shaped loaf that’s unsliced.
  • Butter: If you don’t have unsalted butter, regular salted butter can be used.
  • Garlic: For the best flavor, use fresh garlic bulbs and either a garlic press or a Microplane to mince the garlic.
  • Italian seasoning: Enhances the flavor of the butter.
  • Parsley: Adds great flavor and bright specks of green.
  • Cheese: Use freshly grated parmesan for the best flavor.

How to Make Sourdough Garlic Bread

  • Preheat the oven to 400°F and cut the loaf in half lengthwise.
  • In a small bowl, mix the butter, fresh garlic, garlic powder, Italian seasoning, parsley, and Parmesan. Add salt and black pepper to taste.
  • Spread the butter mixture over each half of the loaf. Lightly wrap each half in foil and place on a baking sheet cut side up.
  • Bake for 10 minutes, remove the foil, and bake for an additional 5-8 minutes or until the bread is lightly toasted and golden around the edges. The middle of the bread should be slightly dried out but still soft and not wet. If you like extra crispy garlic bread, place the bread under the broiler for 30-45 seconds. Watch it carefully to ensure it doesn’t burn.
  • Transfer the garlic bread to a cutting board and cut it into 1-inch thick slices.

What Does Sourdough Garlic Bread Taste Like?

Sourdough’s tangy flavor pairs beautifully with savory garlic and salty butter. It also crisps up well and has a lovely chewy texture.

Tips And Tricks

  • Take the butter out of the fridge 30 minutes to an hour ahead of time to allow it to soften.
  • Instead of using Italian seasoning, try dried thyme, savory, rosemary, or oregano for a different flavor profile.
  • Freshly grated pecorino romano or Parmigiano Reggiano can be used in place of the parmesan cheese.

How To Store Sourdough Garlic Bread

Leftover sourdough garlic bread should be cooled to room temperature, wrapped in foil and stored at room temperature for 1-2 days. It can also be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Can You Freeze Sourdough Garlic Bread?

Yes. Wrap the cooled garlic bread in plastic and then in foil. Freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. There’s no need to thaw the garlic bread before reheating.

How To Reheat Sourdough Garlic Bread

The best way to reheat sourdough garlic bread is in the oven. Wrap the leftovers in foil and bake in a 350°F oven for 10 minutes. Remove the foil and heat for another 5 minutes or so until slightly crisp. If the garlic bread is frozen, add approximately 5 minutes to the baking time.
