Poached Pear Recipe

Prep: 5 minutes
Cook: 40 minutes
Total: 45 minutes
Servings: 4 pears

Ingredients 

  • 4 medium sized pears
  • 2 cups red wine
  • ½ cup water
  • ½ cup sugar
  • 8 cloves, whole
  • 1 stick cinnamon
  • 1 orange peel
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

Instructions 

  • In a saucepan that is large enough to submerge the pears, place all the ingredients except the pears in.
  • Over medium heat, bring the saucepan mixture to a simmer while stirring to dissolve the sugar.
  • Peel the pear and immediately submerge it in the simmered liquid in the saucepan.
  • Let the pears poach in the liquid on medium to low heat for 20 minutes, then turn off the heat and allow the pears to cool inside the liquid for at least 5 hours.
  • Before serving, place the pears upright on a plate.
  • Simmer the poaching liquid down into a thick syrup and pour it over the pears and serve!
