What Temperature Should You Bake Potatoes At?

For the best baked potatoes, we recommend baking your potatoes in the oven at a temperature between 400 °F to 450°F degrees. At this temperature, you’ll get fluffy potatoes with nice, crispy skin.

What Temp Are Baked Potatoes Done Cooking?

Did you know that you can use a thermometer to determine when potatoes are perfectly done?

Baked potatoes taste best at an internal temp of 205 to 215°F. Use a thermometer with a probe to check the temperature of your baked potatoes.

How to Tell If Baked Potatoes Are Done

There are several ways to check whether a baked potato is done:

    • Skin: it should be wrinkly with a papery appearance.
    • Texture: the center should be soft enough that a fork slides in easily.
    • Temperature: the middle should have reached 210°F.

Most people use the fork method as the most convenient way to check doneness.

How to Bake Potatoes in the Oven

    • The first step in baking a potato is to make sure that it is clean by scrubbing it well under running water.
    • Then poke several holes at least an inch deep using a fork. Some people like to wrap in foil, but note the skin will steam and not become crispy.
    • Place the potato in the oven and bake according to the recipe instructions.
    • Remove from the oven using an oven mitt or kitchen tongs.
    • To serve, cut in half lengthwise down the middle. Then fluff up the insides with a fork and add your favorite toppings!

What Should the Internal Temperature of a Baked Potato Be?

Bake your potatoes to an internal temperature of approximately 210°F (100°C) for the best result.

Want to be doubly sure your potatoes are perfectly cooked? Insert an instant-read thermometer into the center and In fact, 205°F out of the oven is close enough, since it will keep rising while resting.

    How to Store Baked Potatoes

Baked potatoes taste best when they’re hot out of the oven. If you do need to store your potatoes for later, do not wrap them in foil. This can cause them to harbor bacteria. Instead, store baked potatoes in sealed, airtight containers in the fridge for up to 5 days.

    How to Freeze Baked Potatoes?

Once your baked potatoes have completely cooled, wrap them individually in plastic wrap or foil, then place them in an airtight, freezer-safe bag. Consume them within three months.

    How to Reheat Baked Potatoes?

For leftover potatoes that taste just as good as if they were freshly baked, you’ll need to use the oven. Preheat to 350°F, then bake the potatoes for 15-20 minutes.

    Tips and Tricks

    • Before placing your potatoes in the oven to bake, it is best to prick the skin in a few places about an inch deep. This step allows steam to easily escape for a consistent texture and prevent explosion.
    • If you prefer crispy skins, don’t wrap potatoes in foil. Wrapped potatoes don’t have crispy skin, as the potato’s moisture gets trapped, steaming the skin instead of allowing it to dry out. The result is more of a boiled potato taste.
    • Choose similar sized potatoes so that they will cook at the same rate.

Can You Overcook Potatoes in the Oven?

Yes! Leaving your potatoes in the oven for too long will cause them to dry out and harden. They will also develop brown spots on the outside. To avoid this, remove the potatoes from the oven when they are done.

What Goes Well With Baked Potato

Baked potatoes are even better with toppings! We love any combination of these tasty options:

    • sour cream and chives
    • salt and pepper
    • broccoli and cheese
    • bacon
    • shredded cheese
    • chili
    • butter

Baked potatoes are a delicious side dish with entrees like steak, salmon, grilled chicken or pork chops. If you need a light lunch or dinner, you can have a baked potato on its own, complete with your favorite toppings and a side salad.

    FAQ

Can I Make Microwave Baked Potatoes?

If you don’t want to fire up the oven, the microwave can be used to make baked potatoes in a flash. Use a fork to stab a few holes in the potato to prevent it from exploding. Microwave on full power for five minutes, then turn the potato over and heat for another 5 minutes. The flesh should be soft, fluffy and easily mashed with a fork.

Can You Make Baked Sweet Potatoes With The Same Method?

Baked sweet potatoes can also be done in the oven or microwave. However, sweet potatoes typically take longer to cook.

Do Baked Potatoes Cook Faster With Or Without Foil?

Foil doesn’t affect the cooking time or taste of baked potatoes, so there’s no real benefit to using it. In fact, we don’t recommend using foil, since potatoes taste better when they’re left uncovered while baking. We also don’t recommend storing baked potatoes in foil, unless they’re being frozen.

Are You Supposed To Boil Potatoes Before Baking Them?

There’s no need to boil potatoes before putting them in the oven. This would only cause them to be overcooked.

Why Do They Put Salt On The Outside Of Baked Potatoes?

Putting salt on the outside of potatoes produces softer, fluffier insides. Salt helps to pull the moisture out of the potato, which improves its texture.

Do You Poke Holes In Potatoes Before Baking In Oven?

It’s important to poke holes in potatoes before putting them in the oven or microwave. The holes allow steam to escape, which allows for more even cooking.
