When baking recipes from other cultures or countries, you may find the ingredients are measured in units you don’t normally use. In these instances, it’s handy to know the conversions. Below, we give you a quick and easy breakdown for calculating ounces in a quart for your fluid ounces.

Why Do I Need Conversions?

Knowing how many ounces are in a quart can make cooking and baking much quicker and simpler. When you know the conversions by heart, you can cut your cooking time dramatically. 

Before you start, read through each recipe carefully to see what you need and what you’ll have to convert. Then, take out your scale, measuring cups, spoons, jugs, and your ingredients. The more prepared you are, the better your overall cooking experience. 

What Exactly Are Ounces And Quarts?

In the Imperial system, we measure ounces in weight and fluid. In other words, when you measure the weight or volume of a liquid, you measure it in fluid ounces. This unit is most often used in the United States, but there are some other countries that also use this system. Other liquid measuring units include quarts, pints, and gallons. 

Note: For any conversion to work, the converted ingredient must have the same volume and mass as the ingredient being converted. So we convert dry items using dry weight units and liquids with fluid units. If you don’t do this, your recipe will most certainly flop! 

For example: 

• In the Imperial system, one fluid ounce equals 28.4 milliliters (Metric system). So even though there are 28.34 milliliters in an ounce, the US system measures volume in fluid ounces.
• One quart of liquid weighs about 32 ounces (US system). One fluid quart equals 33.31 fluid ounces (Imperial system). 
• In the US, a liquid quart is equivalent to 946 milliliters, while an imperial liquid quart equals 1136 milliliters.
• A dry quart in the US equals 37.24 ounces of liquid (US system) or 38.76 fluid ounces (Imperial system).
• One-quart liquid equals one-quarter gallon.

How to Convert Ounces to a Quart

As mentioned above, fluid ounces (for liquids) are not the same as weight by the ounce. An ounce (or a fluid ounce) is the amount of water weighing one ounce. In the Imperial System of measurement, there are 32 ounces in one quart. Also remember that you cannot use measuring tools designed for dry ingredients when measuring liquid.

Some recipes also measure in cups. In this case, there are 4 cups in one quart (8 oz per cup) and 4 quarts in one gallon (i.e. a ‘quarter’ of a gallon, hence the name). There are 2 pints in one quart and 16 fluid ounces in one pint.

• 1 Cup equals 8 fl oz
• 1 US Pint is equal to 2 Cups or 16 fl oz
• 1 Quart is equal to 2 Pints, 4 Cups or 32 fl oz
• 1 Gallon is equal to 4 Quarts, 16 cups or 128 fl oz

Keep in mind that these are US measurements. In the United Kingdom, Imperial pints are measured as 20 fluid ounces (in contrast to 16 fluid ounces in the US).
