How to Cook Boston Butt

  • Pour all of the seasonings and brown sugar in a small bowl and mix until combined.
  • Rub the spice mixture all over the pork to cover.
  • Bake at 325°F for 20 minutes per pound until an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the roast reaches 145°F.
  • Remove the pork from the oven and let it rest for at least 20 minutes before slicing.

What Does Boston Butt Taste Like?

Because of its high-fat content, Boston butt is full of delicious flavor. It’s moist and flavorful and pairs well with both dried spices and fresh herbs.

Why Is It Called Boston Butt?

The name dates back to colonial times in New England when cuts of pork shoulders were packed into brine-filled barrels called butts.

Tips And Tricks

  • If you’re feeding a crowd, it’s best to use two 3-pound roasts instead of a larger 6-pound roast. Smaller Boston butts have better flavor and are more moist and tender.
  • Make it your own by swapping some of the seasonings with your favorites. Smoked paprika, dried thyme, and cumin are all good options.
  • The resting time after roasting is essential. It allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat for moist and juicy results.

How To Serve Boston Butt

Boston butt is a versatile cut that pairs well with just about anything. Serve it alongside any kind of potato, rice, or pasta dish. It’s delicious with Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, and winter squash. Leftovers can be enjoyed on sandwiches or served with coleslaw or fresh garden salads.

What’s The Best Way To Cook Boston Butt?

Boston butt is a fatty cut of pork that’s best prepared low and slow. Here are some great ways to prepare it:

  • Roast it in the oven at moderate heat. This recipe for Boston butt is coated with a spice blend and roasted in a 325°F oven.
  • Use a smoker and make pulled pork. Shred the pork and serve it on toasted buns with a side of coleslaw.
  • Cook the pork in an Instant Pot for tender results every time. The pressure cooker tenderizes the meat so it’s juicy and full of flavor.
  • Using a slow cooker is an easy and convenient way to cook Boston butt. Set it up in the morning and come home to a succulent roast ready to serve.

How To Store Leftover Boston Butt

Leftovers should be cooled to room temperature, placed in an airtight container, and stored in the fridge for 3-5 days.

Can You Freeze Boston Butt?

Yes. Let the leftovers cool and then freeze in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Frozen leftovers should be defrosted in the fridge overnight before reheating.

How To Reheat Boston Butt

Boston butt can be reheated in the oven, on the stovetop, or in the microwave. For the oven, place the leftovers in a casserole dish. Add a tablespoon of stock or water and cover with foil. Heat in a 325°F oven until hot.

On the stovetop, heat a saucepan over medium heat. Heat until hot. If the pork seems dry, add a tablespoon or two of water or stock.

In the microwave, place the pork on a microwave-safe plate and cover it. Heat at reduced power for about 1-2 minutes or until hot.

How to Store Raw Boston Butt

Raw Boston butt can typically be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days. Check the label for specific information. If you won’t be cooking the pork soon after purchasing, it’s best to store it in the freezer.

How Much Boston Butt Should I Serve Per Person?
