Is Avocado And Guacamole The Same Thing?

Avocado is a fruit that’s the key ingredient in guacamole. It’s blended with onions, tomatoes, garlic, and seasonings to make guacamole. A regular mashed avocado isn’t guacamole until it’s combined with other ingredients.

What Does Guacamole Taste Like?

Because the main ingredient in guacamole is avocado, it has the savory nutty flavor of avocado. It’s creamy in texture and also features the flavors of zesty lime, cilantro, and pungent garlic and onion.

Guacamole Dip Ingredients

  • Avocados: Be sure to use ripe avocados. This will ensure that the guacamole is creamy and flavorful.
  • Onion: Regular yellow onions can be used as well as red onions.
  • Tomatoes: Roma tomatoes are an excellent option because they aren’t too juicy.
  • Cilantro: Adds a distinctive tangy and citrusy flavor. Cilantro is frequently used in Mexican cuisine.
  • Jalapeno: Adds a hint of heat. Serrano peppers can be used as well.
  • Garlic: Adds pungent savory flavor.
  • Lime: Use freshly squeezed lime juice. It enhances the flavors of the overall dish and adds fresh flavor.
  • Salt: Add a pinch of salt to bring everything together.

How to Make Guacamole Dip

  • Slice the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a mixing bowl.
  • Mash the avocados until the desired texture is reached.

Use Ripe Avocados For The Perfect Guacamole

Look for avocados that are ripe, but firm. The avocado should have a slight give it when pressed. It shouldn’t feel mushy. Choose avocados that still have the stem attached. If you can’t find a ripe avocado, it can take anywhere from 3-7 days for an avocado to ripen in your kitchen at room temperature, depending on how ripe it was when purchased from the grocery store.

How To Store Guacamole and Prevent it From Turning Brown

Guacamole turns brown quickly when exposed to the air. Lime juice helps to slow the process of oxidation but the guacamole will still turn brown quickly.

  • According to some stories, placing the avocado pit in the bowl with the prepared guacamole will help to prevent it from turning brown.
  • Lemon juice can help to slow down oxidation but it will change the flavor of the guacamole.
  • Place leftover guacamole in an airtight container and smooth the top with a spoon to make the top as flat as possible.
  • Add about 1/2 inch of cold water on top. Cover with the lid and place the container  in the fridge.

When it’s time to eat the leftover guacamole, drain the water from the top, give it a good stir and enjoy! You can also freeze guacamole and here is how to do it properly.
