Difference Between Gelato and Ice Cream

Gelato is an Italian frozen dessert looks and tastes similar to ice cream. However, it has less cream and more milk than regular ice cream. It also has less air and therefore denser than ice cream.

The blender ice cream recipe I am sharing with you today uses only bananas and Nutella, so it’s healthier than traditional ice cream because there’s no added sugar or cream. It’s almost like a sorbet, but it’s creamy and chocolaty, full of flavor!

How to Make Ice Cream in A Blender

The secret to the best blender banana ice cream is to select the right bananas. Start out with ripe but not overripe bananas. It’s best to use the bananas with dark yellow skin and lots of small browning. Riper bananas will produce creamier and sweeter ice cream.

Step 1: Slice your bananas into ½-inch slices and place them in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Step 2: Freeze for about 3-4 hours until they are completely firm and harden.

Step 3: Add frozen banana pieces into a blender and process until thick and creamy.

Step 4: Add Nutella and blend again until well mixed. Transfer into a bowl or freezer bag.

Step 5: Place it in the freezer and freeze for about 1 hour. Garnish with your favorite toppings such as raspberries and mint!

HEALTHY ICE CREAM

This frozen blender ice cream has much less sugar or fat than the regular ice cream. To make it even healthier, you can swap Nutella for cocoa powder.

Alternatively, you can omit the chocolate part all together and make this into a one-ingredient banana ice cream! Talk about healthy and clean eating!

Can I Make Ice Cream without A Blender?

Good news! You can make this Nutella banana ice cream without any machine. Just mash the bananas into a puree with a fork. And then add mashed bananas and Nutella into a bowl. Mix well and freeze!  You will need to let it freeze a little longer than the blender method. Wait for about 4 hours before taking it out.  Let it sit at the room temperature for a few minutes before scoop it up into serving bowls!

Blender Ice Cream Variations:

Vanilla Ice Cream:You can add 1 tablespoon vanilla extract and ½ cup milk or cream for vanilla flavored ice cream.

Gluten Free Ice Cream: Replace Nutella with cocoa powder for low carb gluten free ice cream. Pure cocoa powder is also a sugar free, dairy free and vegan option.

Rocky Road Ice Cream: Add some mini marshmallows and nuts for an indulgent ice cream!
